Book Review: Complete Office Handbook

This is a handy office reference book that would be a valuable resource for any administrative assistant, particularly those just entering the workplace. It covers just about everything you would ever come across in today's office and is the only office handbook recommended by the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP).

Previous thoughts for the day

An administrative assistant needs to take on administrative tasks with authority and professionalism. Sometimes that means accepting responsibility when things don't go as planned.

You know you are getting old when you wish alphabet soup came in large print.

Old bloggers never die, we just start repeating our posts.

After using facial bleach a little boy asked me, "Do men have black moustaches and women have white?"

The only mistakes that are bad are the ones you don't learn from.

The Boss That Hovers...Don’t you just hate it when your boss stands behind you as you are trying to get something urgently done? I make all sorts of mistakes as I try to type with someone looking on. I can almost hear them anxiously pacing in their minds, “Hurry up, hurry up!”

The location of your Office Suggestion Box can give you a good idea of how important it is to your organization. If it is located near the garbage can, don't expect your suggestions to be taken too seriously.

Personal hygiene is something that may not be talked about, but that doesn’t mean people aren’t aware of it.

Quitting a job before finding out for sure you have another one is like getting on an elevator with a full bladder. You hope it doesn't get stuck.

When in Doubt “Right Click”
I have found that when you are trying to find out how to do something in a document and can’t seem to come up with the answer, try right clicking. When all else fails, it will usually be the answer.

What can you do in the office when the power goes out? - Absolutely nothing!

No-Name People
I’m sure you have all heard of no-name products in the grocery store, but if you haven't they are a cheaper version of a name brand of the same product.

Sometimes I have a hard time remembering someone’s name. I recognize the face, but I just can’t seem to come up with a name. A woman at work was laughing at me as I was trying to remember her name. She concluded that their side of the office was the no-name side, but she said, “We may be no-name, but we definitely aren't cheap”.

There was a man who took a vow of silence while at a monastery. He was to remain silent each year and at the end of the year was allowed to say only two words.After the first year they waited to hear what he was going to say and he said, “Bad food”.Again he remained silent for another year and when he was allowed to speak again he said, “Cold room”.By the end of the third year he spoke again and this time he said, “I quit”.The head of the monastery replied, “You might as well quit”. “You’ve been here for three years and you’ve been complaining the whole time”.

The new pollution may be our use of modern technology. We invade each other’s space with our lack of good etiquette in the use of cell phones and we bombard inboxes with unwanted e-mails.

Two Secretaries are better than one

Secretaries are People too!

If you don’t want your boss to know about it, that is a good indication that you shouldn’t write about it on your blog.

I was speaking to a friend and she jokingly said the office slogan for the assistant could be, "Stick around, I may need someone to blame"! We laughed but sometimes it's true. People need to blame someone when something goes wrong and sometimes it is the assistant who gets blamed. Then the assistant needs to blame someone so she blames the Mailroom staff and the Mailroom staff need to blame someone so they blame the courier company and on and on it goes playing the Blame Game...

I can’t help thinking that the greatest invention that has had the biggest impact on how we do things in the office is the yellow sticky.

Knowledge without wisdom doesn’t amount to much. Put the two together and you’ve got something.
